ICTC Addresses Skills Shortages at the House of Commons Standing CommitteeThe Information and Communication Technology Council (ICTC) is pleased to report that on Wednesday April 4, 2012, Namir Anani, President and CEO of ICTC, appeared as a witness at the House of Commons, Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities. He was joined by Sandra Saric, ICTC Director of Talent Initiatives. The order of the day was a new study entitled: Fixing the Skills Gap: Addressing Existing Labour Shortages in High Demand Occupations.

Nanotechnology in CanadaCurrent Issues and Implications for Future ICT Human Resources Nanotechnology (NT) presents an excellent opportunity for Canada to be a major global player in science, technology and innovation, due to Canada’s strength in research and development. NT is a pervasive and enabling technology that impacts a number of other technologies, including Life Sciences, New Media, Pharmaceuticals, Energy as well as Information and Communications Technology (ICT). NT is projected to continue receiving massive global investments. According to Cientifica, in the last 11 years, more than US$67.5 billion in funding nanotechnology research has been invested by governments around the world[1]. The future global need for NT workers will be significant; the U.S. National Science Foundation estimates that 2 million NT workers will be needed by 2015. Study Shows Vast Skills, Labour Shortages Looming for Canada’s Tech SectorCanada’s ICT sector, representing the country’s information, communications and technology employment base, is facing alarming skills and labour shortages in the next five years. Today’s release of Outlook for Human Resources in the ICT Labour Market, 2011-2016 by the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) , in partnership with the Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC) , underscores the shortages, and paints a picture of a new job market for ICT that has radically changed. ICTC also reported that all stakeholders in the sector—industry and education, the associations that represent them, and government—recognize the looming shortages and are poised to act.

Apply NOW for the Career Focus ProgramICTC has been approved to offer the highly successful Career Focus Program until March 15, 2012. Last year ICTC’s Career Focus has placed 56 participants in 26 companies across 7 provinces. The Career Focus program allows a host company to provide employment to the participant for a minimum period of four months, making the last possible date for a participant to begin December 1st, 2011.

This program is an educational initiative by the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) to provide students in grades 11 and 12 with a head start on post-secondary education goals. Canada Needs New Approach to Dealing with Critical Skills Shortage: ICTC ReportICTC wrapped up the release of the Outlook for Human Resources in the ICT Labour Market: 2008-2015 by visiting seven cities to share regional findings and to engage in dialogue about the regional implications of the report’s findings. The report, which can be viewed by clicking here, focused on Canada's skills shortages in the critical Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector reveals that a serious skills shortage is threatening the sector.

ICTC Partners with the Conference Board of Canada for Immigration RoundtableICTC partnered with the Conference Board of Canada at their Leaders’ Roundtable on Immigration held on October 21-22, 2008 in Banff, Alberta. The objective of the roundtable was to engage leaders in developing and implementing effective strategies for attracting, integrating and retaining internationally educated professionals (IEPs) in order to ensure sustainable competitiveness. Both ICTC and the Conference Board of Canada have completed research that identifies IEPs as a critical source of talent for all Canadian employers. To meet their workforce needs, employers must take full advantage of all supply channels to enhance organizational competitiveness and growth. The primary focus of the leaders’ roundtable was to increase business investment in IEPs and to foster government policies and programs that support workplace initiatives.

ICTC Path to Recognition Developing Certification Straw ModelThe Pathway to Recognition Initiative is ICTC’s response to industry demands for a certification/recognition system that will integrate both business and technical skills. The current phase of the project built a straw model of what such a system might look like and is performing market research within the ICT field to understand whether the model is accurate, responds to perceived needs and would have currency among those in ICT professions or the ICT industry.

ICTC releases a study on Enrolment in Computer Science in Canadian UniversitiesThe need for The Outlook on Human Resources in the ICT Labour Market: 2012-15 continues to grow and is slated to be released Summer 2008. ICTC is releasing a report today concluding that the sustainability of Canada's ICT workforce is in jeopardy due to the decline in undergraduate enrolments in computer science. In Canada, the decline started in 2002 and results in current enrolments plummeting by 36% to 64% of their peak values in all but one region in Canada.
