ICT Subsectors

“Technology drives skills. It does so by creating new industries from semiconductors to software and reshaping long established industries from banking to retailing. In a very real sense, technology is the economy: the prevailing division and organization of labour.”

- ICTC’s Wireless Technology Roadmap: 2006-2016

Digital media, eHealth, wireless technology and financial services are just a few of the subsectors within the broader information and communications technology (ICT) sector in Canada that are emerging rapidly as drivers of the new digital economy. ICTC continues to lead the way in investigating and identifying critical human resource issues and occupations in these subsectors in order to help inform long-term strategic planning by the ICT industry.

Digital Media – Increasingly, large investments from both the public and private sectors are being made to ensure that Canada remains competitive in the global Digital Media space. To remain competitive, however, Canada needs highly qualified talent to meet the demands of the industry. ICTC is currently conducting a sector study on digital media that will identify and assess this sub-sector’s critical human resource issues and stimulate the development of strategic plans to address the identified issues.

eHealth – In partnership with several leading industry associations, ICTC  conducted a landmark sector study of Health Informatics (HI) and Health Information Management (HIM) professionals in Canada, including a situational analysis of eHealth in Canada (eHealth in Canada: Current Trends and Future Challenges) and a HI and HIM Human Resources Report, examining supply and demand trends and providing evidence-based research for the development of HR strategies for the future.

Wireless Technology – In a seminal subsector study, ICTC mapped the crucial skills needed to make Canada a Global Wireless Leader, which are detailed in ICTC’s Wireless Technology Roadmap: 2006-2016.

ICT in the Financial Services - Technology is a key enabler that is continually growing in importance within the Finance sector.  For example, the ability of financial companies to serve their clients remotely through the use of ICT has changed the landscape of ICT employment in this sector.  It is therefore imperative that we recognize ICT workers as a critical component to this sector’s success.
