IWES Eligibility Criteria


To be accepted into the IWES program, candidates must meet the minimum requirements identified below:

  • Permanent resident in Canada  
  • IT/ICT background and experience
  • Looking for work in IT/ICT field
  • Live in or close to the city where IWES is being delivered
  • Available full-time for 6 training weeks (and for a minimum 3 month practicum afterward)
  • Immigrated permanently to Canada within the last 3 years*
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Post-secondary education
  • Strong command of English Language (Speaking, Reading, Writing, Listening)
    • Canadian Language Benchmark 8 required in each category of the Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment (CLBA)**
  • Have taken courses/workshops in at least one of the following: Job Search, Resumé Writing, Interview Skills or other related topics

*If you immigrated to Canada before Jan 1, 2007, but meet all other requirements, you may still be accepted into the IWES pilot program. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

** All applicants will be required to submit their CLBA language test results from an authorized Canadian Language Benchmark assessment centre with their application. See below for how to take the assessment.

YMCA Language Assessment and Referral Centre 

To enter the program, all participants in the IWES program must have a Canadian Language Benchmark 8 (CLB8) in each of the following: Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening of the Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment (CLBA). All applicants are requested to go to the YMCA Language Assessment and Referral Centre to complete a CLBA language assessment for entry into the program.

Making an appointment: Please call 416-925-5462 Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4:30 to book an appointment.  Assessment appointments are available during the day, evening and Saturday.

Call or visit one of 4 locations, open Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. Evening and Saturday appointments also available.

  • Free-of-charge English language assessments for individuals who are 18 years of age with Landed Immigrant or Convention Refugee status
  • Fee-based English language assessments for individuals not eligible for free-of-charge language assessments
  • Eligibility must be verified prior to scheduling an appointment, and all fees paid in full if applicable.

Original documents indicating immigration status in Canada, and photo identification must be presented at the time of assessment.

Who is Eligible?
