The Information and Communications Technology sector encompasses all companies that develop goods or services that process, transmit or receive information.
How is the ICT sector important to Canada?
According to Industry Canada:
The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector contributed $60.6 billion to Canadian GDP ($1997) in 2005 - accounting for 5.6% of Canadian output, up from 4.0% in 1997.
Economic activity has picked up in the ICT sector in 2005 as GDP grew by a significant 5.6% compared to 3.9% in 2004. Average annual growth in this sector has been 8.0% since 1997, more than twice as fast as the overall economy (+3.5%). This faster growth also means that ICT industries have accounted for 10.6% of the Canadian GDP growth since 1997.
What is a sector council?
The Government of Canada’s Sector Council Program (SCP) works to enable partnerships that address skills and human resource issues by establishing, developing and supporting national partnerships and the capacity of partners to address both pressing and emerging skills and human resource issues. By bringing together corporate executives, owner-operators of smaller firms, employees, educators and interested government representatives, Sector Councils provide a practical perspective on change. The sector council approach can also improve international competitiveness for all, sector by sector.

What is ICTC’s relationship with government?
