The Focus on Information Technology program (FIT) is a part of ICTC’s youth initiative that focuses on providing tools to explore career possibilities in Canada’s ICT sector. FIT was designed to help Canadian secondary students recognize the importance of ICT, while developing their skills in business, communications, and technology. FIT is carefully aligned with provincial curriculum, allowing students to meet the requirements of their provincial secondary school diploma, while pursuing FIT certifications. FIT further challenges their students by encouraging them to prepare for industry recognized credentials such as A+, Java, Cisco IT Essentials, Adobe certifications, and Microsoft.
Why ICT and Education?
Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) are widely being adopted across every industry in Canada. From health care to energy, from manufacturing to agriculture, our need for a highly skilled ICT-workforce is increasing and our education system must reflect this need. The FIT program was developed in response to this demand and focuses students’ learning of skills that are considered valuable within the 21st century workplace – ICT skills.
Youth Employment & ICT Skills
By encouraging youth to pursue ICT related careers, we are playing a pivotal in providing pathways from education to employment. Technology is one of the fast-growing areas of our economy and it is projected that between 2011 and 2016, Canadian employers will need to hire approximately 106,000 ICT workers (ICTC Outlook for Human Resources in the ICT Labour Market, 2011–2016). By understanding Labor Market trends, ICTC is offering viable solutions that tackle youth unemployment within the Canadian economy.
